Reading Smarter: Comprehension Strategies That Work

In this Young Scholars webinar, students will explore practical strategies they can use to better understand what they read. We’ll look at how techniques like visualizing, predicting, making connections, summarizing, asking questions, and monitoring your understanding can make reading more active and effective.

Students will also learn the difference between literal and inferential meaning, when an answer is stated directly in the text versus when you need to use clues and your own knowledge to figure it out. By the end of the session, students will have a toolkit of strategies they can use when reading for school or on their own.

Learn how to use words, details, and your own experiences to create a mental picture of what is happening in a text.

Discover how clues from words and images can help you anticipate what might happen next.

Explore how connecting what you read to your own experiences and knowledge can make a text easier to understand.

Learn how to recognize when something doesn’t make sense and use other reading strategies to help clarify it.

Practice asking questions before, during, and after reading to help you think more deeply about a text.

Learn the difference between answers that are stated directly in the text and answers that require you to use clues and prior knowledge to make an inference.

Sofia Chambers

Sofia serves as the NSHSS Ambassador Vice President for the 2026–2027 Ambassador Council. As a student leader, she supports Ambassador engagement, helps represent the Ambassador community, and contributes to the continued growth of student-led initiatives within the program. Sofia has also been involved in creative student projects as the co-producer of Star Dust Animation, a student-led animation studio, where she has helped develop original creative work alongside fellow NSHSS members. In her role as Ambassador Vice President, Sofia brings a thoughtful, collaborative, and creative perspective to supporting student leadership and community-building within NSHSS.

Adaliz is a Senior at Pepin Academies in Pasco campus, FL. She is also a graphic designer, author, tutor, and passionate student rights advocate, with hobbies ranging from painting, sketching, and sewing to piano, gardening, clay sculpting, and filmmaking.
